How to Build a Real-Time Security Alerting Workflow
A practical guide to deciding which security events need immediate attention, routing alerts to the right people, and reducing attacker dwell time with real-time visibility.
Overview
Real-time alerts are how you turn security telemetry into action. Raw logs are valuable for investigation and compliance, but they do not stop an active attack on their own. If a compromised user starts disabling MFA, creating admin accounts, or moving data out of the environment right now, your team needs to know right now.
This guide explains how to build an alerting workflow that creates urgency for the events that matter most without overwhelming your team with noise.
Why it matters: Faster alerts reduce attacker dwell time, speed containment, and make after-hours response more predictable.
Step 1: Choose the Events That Deserve an Immediate Response
Not every event should interrupt your team. Focus first on security events where a delay of even 15-30 minutes can materially increase risk.

The biggest failure mode in real-time alerting is not missing alerts - it is generating so many that people stop paying attention.
Before enabling a rule, tune the workflow with:

- What happens if nobody responds?

- A linked response playbook for first actions

Do not assume the workflow works because the configuration looks correct. Test it end to end at least quarterly and after any major routing change.

- Simulating repeated failed logins in a test account
- Triggering a known benign IOC match in a lab environment
- Verifying a non-production log source outage alert
Confirm that:
- The alert arrives within the expected timeframe
- The correct user or on-call team is notified
- The alert includes enough context to make a decision
- Escalation happens automatically if the alert is not acknowledged
- The incident can be documented for audit and post-incident review
